The issue of lack of support for btrfs partitions has been raised with Synology, but 10 months later there has been no progress. If all partitions on the Linux Server are in btrfs, then the entire backup fails. This is then recorded in the log as a warning (for example: \home will not be backed up. Partitions in btrfs are ignored during the backup execution. Given this omission I think it should be pointed out that a ‘bare metal’ backup of a Linux Server is incomplete/unsuccessful if that server has one or more btrfs-formated partitions. Support for btrfs is missing – which is the more surprising as it is the file format Synology recommends to use on it’s NAS devices in order to use features such as Snapshots and Snapshot Replication. Currently, only these file system types are supported: ext2, ext3, ext4 and XFS. I feel the following limitation needs to be highlighted: Not all Linux File Formats are supported by this Synology backup agent for Linux. Connect to your Synology NAS and click Next. Run the Synology Drive Client on your computer.

If you receive a message asking you to trust the certificate, proceed if you agree. Once you download and install Synology client drive go ahead and the run the program. Enter the Server Address, Username and Password. Run the command below to connect to the instance. After the install finishes, we will need to connect to our Synology NAS. We will install the application by running the n file using the command below. Two files will extract – an n file and a README.

NOTE: If you have multiple files with the name Synology, you might have to use the full name as opposed to the *. Navigate to the folder where the package exists and unzip it. Download the correct package (I will be using Debian as I am using Ubuntu). Select Physical Server, then Linux, then select Add Device.ģ.
